How to Estimate Flooring Boxes for a Room

How to Estimate Flooring Boxes for a Room

Calculate square footage, add a waste factor, and estimate how many boxes of flooring you should buy.

Estimate Flooring the Simple Way

Flooring is one of those projects where being short even one box can derail your weekend. This guide helps you get a clean estimate fast.

Step 1: Get Your Floor Area

Measure the room length and width. If you’re doing multiple rooms, run the tool once per room and add the totals.

Step 2: Convert Area Into Boxes

Find the box coverage on the packaging (e.g., 18.5 sq ft, 23 sq ft). Then add a waste factor:

  • 10%: typical straight layout
  • 12–15%: diagonal layouts, lots of angles, old houses

Quick Tip

If your box coverage is listed in square meters, convert it first:

(You can also use it as a quick inches→mm helper if you’re mixing metric/imperial specs.)

Sanity Check

If your box count feels oddly high, double-check that you didn’t mix up feet and inches while measuring.
