How to Calculate Flooring for an L-Shaped Room

Calculate exact flooring boxes for rooms that aren't a simple rectangle.
L-shaped rooms or rooms with alcoves are common in modern homes. They are easy to calculate as long as you break the space down into smaller rectangles.
The Section Method
Simply divide your floor plan into two or more rectangular sections. Calculate the area of each and add them together before finding your total flooring box count.
Flooring Box Estimation
Once you have your total area, divide that by the number of square feet per box (usually listed on the material label). A 10% waste factor should be applied to cover offcuts and transitions.
