How to Calculate Ramp Length from Rise

Quickly find the run and total length of a wheelchair or equipment ramp based on height and slope ratio.

Building a ramp for a shed or home access requires an exact slope ratio. If a ramp is too steep, it's unsafe or non-compliant with ADA or building codes.

Slope Ratio Standards

A standard wheelchair ramp ratio is 1:12 (one inch of rise for every 12 inches of run). For shed ramps, you might use 1:8 if you're only moving light equipment.

Building for Safety

Always include a landing area at the top of the ramp that matches the width of the door or access point. If your ramp exceeds 30 feet in length, you'll need intermediate rest landings for safety.
