How to Estimate Roof Area from Roof Pitch

Calculate your roof's total square footage based on ground footprint and pitch angle to find shingles or metal coverage.

A roof's area is always larger than the footprint of the house due to its slope. The steeper the pitch, the more material (shingles, metal, or underlayment) you need.

The Pitch Factor

The slope of a roof is expressed as 'Rise per 12 inches of Run'. A 4/12 roof has a smaller slope factor than a 12/12 roof. Our calculator uses this factor to instantly find the correct sloped area.

Safety and Measurement

Measuring pitch from the ground is safer than climbing a ladder. You can often find the pitch by measuring the incline of a gable end or using a smartphone's level app against a rafter in the attic.
