How to Estimate Studs for 16" On-Center Framing

Calculate exact stud counts for walls with standard 16" on-center spacing, including plates and end studs.

Building a wall with 16-inch on-center (OC) spacing is the industrial standard for residential framing. This ensures compatibility with standard 4x8 drywall and plywood sheets.

The 16" OC Rule

To calculate the number of studs in a wall, divide the wall length by 16 and add one end stud. This rule-of-thumb ensures structural support at both ends of the wall section.

The Plate Factor

Remember that you also need lumber for the top and bottom plates. For a standard 8-foot wall, add two additional 2x4s for the top plate and one for the bottom plate per 12-foot section.
