How to Estimate Tile Count (Plus Waste)

Estimate surface area, calculate tile count by tile size, and add a waste factor so you don’t run short.

Tile Count Without Overthinking It

Tile projects get expensive fast—and running short is brutal when a tile line is backordered. This guide helps you estimate a tile count that’s realistic.

Step 1: Measure Your Surface Area

For floors: use room length × width.

For a wall: treat it like a rectangle (width × height) and subtract large openings if needed.

Step 2: Calculate Tile Count

Enter your total area and tile size (like 12×12 or 12×24). Then choose a waste factor:

  • 10%: typical install
  • 12–15%: diagonal layouts, patterns, lots of cuts

Tip: Double-check tile size

If your tile is listed in millimeters, convert it first.

Note

This is a tile count estimate based on face area. Grout spacing and layout details can change how many cuts you need, which is why the waste factor matters.
