How to Estimate Tile Count (Plus Waste)

Tile projects get expensive fast—and running short is brutal when a tile line is backordered. This guide helps you estimate a tile count that’s realistic.

Step 1: Measure Your Surface Area

For floors: use room length × width.

For a wall: treat it like a rectangle (width × height) and subtract large openings if needed.

Step 2: Calculate Tile Count

Enter your total area and tile size (like 12×12 or 12×24). Then choose a waste factor:

• 10%: typical install
• 12–15%: diagonal layouts, patterns, lots of cuts

Tip: Double-check tile size

If your tile is listed in millimeters, convert it first.
