Step-by-step execution guide
Ceiling First Strategy
Always hang the ceiling sheets before the walls. This allows the wall sheets to support the edges of the ceiling panels.
Hanging the Walls
Hang sheets horizontally to minimize the total length of visible joints. Offset vertical butt-joints between rows by at least 16 inches for maximum structural integrity.
Taping and First Coat
Apply a thin layer of compound to the joints and press the tape in firmly. Immediately cover with a 6-inch skimming coat. Let dry for 24 hours.
Final Skimming and Sanding
Apply 10-inch and 12-inch coats to 'feather out' the joints. Once dry, sand using a pole sander. Progress from 100 grit to 150 grit for a paint-ready finish.
Jobsite Safety
Always wear eye protection when cutting lumber or driving nails. One splinter can derail a weekend project. Trust the numbers, but prioritize your safety.
