Fencing Project: Secure Post Footings
The industrial standard for setting fence posts in concrete to survive high winds and frost heave.

Building a fence that lasts begins with the footings. This technical roadmap covers the depth and drainage protocols required to resist high winds and prevent seasonal frost heave.
- Fast-Setting Concrete (Red bag)
- Pressure Treated Posts (4x4 or 6x6)
- Gravel (for drainage base)
- Post Sleeves (Optional)

Step-by-step execution guide
Hole Depth and Frost Line
Dig holes at least 1/3 the height of the post. In cold climates, ensure the hole reaches below the local frost line to prevent 'heaving'.
Drainage and Post Set
Add 3 inches of gravel to the bottom of the hole for drainage. This prevents the bottom of the wood post from rotting in standing water.
Plumbing and Bracing
Use a post level (the 3-sided kind) to ensure the post is plumb on two faces. Brace the post with scrap 2x4s and stakes while the concrete sets.
The Slope and Finish
Mound the concrete slightly above ground level and slope it away from the post. This sheds water away from the wood-concrete transition point.
Jobsite Safety
Always wear eye protection when cutting lumber or driving nails. One splinter can derail a weekend project. Trust the numbers, but prioritize your safety.
